He can hardly speak English, let alone Arabic or Afrikaans. His land of migration possibly still considers him to be an outcast. And his occupation is hardly everyone’s cup of tea. Yet, for a few timeless moments on Monday evening, Congolese security guard Fabrice Mutombo was the centre of attraction and the pride of the Mother City.
Worshippers at Cape Town’s Town Centre Mosque may have been dissapointed not to hear a speech from visiting Imaam of the Makkah Haram, Sheikh Mahir al Muayqali, following his performance of the Maghrib Salaah at the venue this week. But there was certainly no shortage of spirituality on the evening, stemming first from his eloquent recital of the Quraan and second from an altogether unplanned addition to the programme.
A migrant worker in South Africa for barely two years, Mutombo has grown accustomed to his guard job for security firm, All 4 Security at the Mitchells Plain Shopping Centre. However, on the evening of the visit of the esteemed Sheikh to the vicinity, hundreds more worshippers than usual were expected to flock to the mosque. This warranted the call-up of extra security personnel to police the area. Being unoccupied at the time, Mutombo was one of those called to duty outside the mosque. However, it was barely minutes later that Mutombo, in as yet unknown circumstances, found himself brushing shoulders with worshippers deep inside the mosque.
Sheikh Mahir had just concluded the congregational prayer and was preparing to leave when it was announced over the PA system that somebody was interested in taking the Shahadah and that the Imam would officiate over the proceedings. In seconds, with the congregation looking on, Mutombo rose and was soon heard repeating the words of the Shahadah or Testimony of Faith after the respected Sheikh. The Imam also congratulated and wished him well soon after.
Speaking to Cii via telephone, a modest Mutombo said he found it difficult to describe his reversion experience in words. “It’s the first time I ever got this feeling in my life. There are just no words which can explain what I felt in my body,” he said.
Mutombo, now known as Ebrahim, had been a Christian all his life. He however said he never felt “quite right” about his faith. According to him, the main motivation for his reversion has been a burning desire to change his life. “It’s not about money, it’s not about anything, I just want to do things right,” he repeatedly told Cii.
All 4 Security Managing Director, Abu Bakr Shira, confirmed to Cii that Mutombo’s presence at the Town Centre Mosque that evening was purely coincidental. “We have two permanent guards stationed at the mosque. However, due to the huge influx of worshippers that evening for the Sheikh’s visit, we required additional guards. Since Fabrice was not on duty, he was called up.” According to Shira, Mutombo had no idea about the presence of the Sheikh, much less who he was. He said he too was pleasantly taken by surprise when he heard how fast the reversion had occured.
Shira noted that this was not the first time Congolese employees working for the company had reverted to Islam. “I do communicate with my many employees, and I personally know of many that have reverted.” He said that All 4 Security was a family orientated enterprise and he always strove to make guards part of the company. “We socialise and interact with our guards and conduct business the Islamic way. Everything we do embodies Islamic principles.” All 4 Security has also taken the initiative of distributing Fitrah parcels annually, and Shira says the experience has afforded them an insight into just how many Muslims there are in the migrant community.
Shira has pledged to take the appropriate steps to ensure Mutombo is educated about the tenets of Islam.
For his part, Mutombo says he is still relishing the “nice feeling” of being a Muslim. Despite being resident to a country that has almost 5 times as many Muslims as South Africa, destiny had it that he would embrace Islam in South Africa, and that too at the hands of a visiting Imaam from Saudi Arabia.He says he is eternally grateful.
“Allah is going to help me. I pray that he makes me strong to change my life.”
